Statistics show that fishing is an extremely popular pass time. Besides being a serious profession, fishing is also as a serious hobby! There are a number of forms of fishing, one being surf fishing. It doesn’t matter if you’re surf fishing in Mexico or anywhere else, as beginners, all anglers face the same set of problems: BasicsOne of the most important basics that separate seasoned surf fishing enthusiast from someone with limited experience is the basics on how to go about it. We figured we’d enlighten our readers and share some of our experience gained knowledge on one of the biggest secrets of surf fishing! What exactly is it again? To make things very simple, surf fishing is basically fishing which is done while standing on an ocean shore. It can also be done submerged hip deep in the water depending on how you’re going about it. It’s all in the StructureThe key to a successful surf-fishing trip lies in the enthusiast’s ability to recognize the varying water structures. To the untrained eye, water is just water, but to someone who knows what is up, there’s a lot more happening. The water structure can give you a fair idea of what you should expect to find! Different StructuresThere are four key structures to look out for when surf fishing which will tell you a lot about what to expect by way of catch. Sandbars and SloughsA slough is a strip of water which possesses a greater depth than the water flowing behind and ahead of it. Sandbars are indicative of the presence of a slough. The way to locate sand bars is by rising and cresting waves that pass over them. Fish often swim and dart within the sloughs. Though these locations are best suited to catch bait fish as well as the common tide runners, you might find larger catches in slightly deeper sloughs. Catches also depend on where in the world you are fishing. Rips and CutsThese spots can be identified by rolling waves (as opposed to cresting ones) and swirling conflicting tides. That being said, cuts are brilliant places to surf fish. This is particularly so at low tide! You often find slightly larger fish lurking around such areas waiting to catch the bait fish and tide runners that swim past! PointsPoints are simply parts of the beach or coastline that protrude or stick out into the ocean. If you look closely at the water around a point, you might see variations in depth. Access to deeper waters could also mean access to interesting fish species. Deeper water can be identified as it will be a darker color than the water around it. Bowls and HolesBowls are super cool. They form when sand bars are breached and can sometimes be v shaped. There is usually a double set of sand bars around a hole and the water here is far deeper than the surrounding. You could identify a hole both by a rolling currant as well as by an excessive presence of sea shells! This is one of the best locations to surf fish if you can locate and manage it! UpshotSo there you have it! Be observant and keep your eyes open for such soft structures on the coast. If you follow the structure you’ll find your fish!
